ALLEN FANNIN MEMORIAL / TEEN ANGLERS FISHING EVENT

ON

 LAKE ONONDAGA,  JULY 19, 2008

 BY TEEN LEADER JOE HULBERT

The 2008 National Teen Anglers Central New York Bass Derby also known as the Allen Fannin Memorial Fishing Derby was another incredibly huge success.  Kids and parents enjoyed a very hot and humid but picture perfect day of fishing on Onondaga Lake.  The fishing this year was incredible!  We caught more bass this year and we caught the biggest bass we have ever caught.  The young anglers also had a catches that included sunfish, bluegills, sheepshead (fresh water drum), yellow perch, and bullheads.

Attendance this year was excellent.  We had young fishermen traveling much larger distances to attend our derby this year.  We had some young B.A.S.S. members that traveled from places as far away as Hydepark and Rhinebeck New York which is near New York City.  These two young anglers were participating in a B.A.S.S. tournament the next day and we hope they did well.

Some of the kids caught some very large fish and were recognized for their accomplishment.  Anthony Mothersell of Syracuse (pictured right) caught the largest bass.  It was a 4.5 lb largemouth bass. John Laplante of Kirkville was the first runner-up.

Tommy Schneider (pictured left) of Cicero caught the largest bluegill/sunfish that weighed 05 oz.  Alex Grabouyy of Liverpool was the first runner-up.

We also had a prize each hour for the largest bluegill.  Our winners were (from left to right), Oleg Grabouyy of Liverpool, Anthony Merritt of Cicero, Tom Merritt II of Cicero, Alex Doughty of Syracuse, Diamond Miller of Earlville, Noah Delaney of Fulton, and Bryan King of Syracuse.

There was one other award given out and unfortunately we forgot to take their picture.  Every year we give out a prize for the oddest fish caught during the derby.  First place winner was Brandon Wood of Syracuse for his 1.4 pound bullhead.  First runner-up was Alex Doughty of Syracuse.  I'm sorry guys that I forgot to take your picture.

Special thank you's go out to Al Bernetti & Suzanne of National Teen Anglers for all of their support and prizes. Thank you to Leiko Benson & the Onondaga Lake Park Staff for all that they do to help make our derby a success.  Thank you to Mickey's Bait and Tackle for helping me advertise the derby.  And most of all to my lovely wife Joann who allows me to share my fishing enthusiasm with kids.

We are already starting to plan next years event that will be on July 18th, 2009.

Mark it on your calendar and we hope to see you all next year.  It is bound to be an awesome time with plenty of the five great F's.  Great fishing, friends, food, facilities and freebies.  Please note!!!  I spoke Leiko and we will be in a new location next year.  We will be under the tent on the other side of the bathrooms and MUCH closer to the outlet channel.  Thanks again Leiko!!
